How many nights do I need to see the northern lights?

It depends on the place more than on luck. In March, a single night had a good sky 19 times in 100 at Abisko and 44 times in 100 in Kiruna, the two ends of the range among the ten places. Stay five nights in a row and the range becomes 56 to 92 in 100.

Each cell counts every run of consecutive March nights from 1995 to 2025 and asks how often the run held at least one good night: one hour that was dark, clear and active enough. Runs stay inside one March. The rules for a good night are on the methodology page.

Where a short trip works

Kiruna and Rovaniemi are the places for a short stay. Three nights in Kiruna found a good night 80 times in 100, three nights in Rovaniemi 73 times. To reach eight trips in ten, Kiruna needed three nights in a row and Rovaniemi four. Höfn, the best of the Icelandic places, needed five.

Where you need a long stay

At Abisko, Tromsø and Akureyri a long weekend is a gamble. Abisko took ten nights to reach eight trips in ten, Tromsø nine and Akureyri nine. Even ten nights in Tromsø ended without a good night in 14 trips out of 100.

Bad years and good years

These are averages over three decades, and single Marches vary a lot. In a bad March (the 10th percentile year) only 37 in 100 five-night stays in Tromsø had a good night; in a good March (the 90th percentile) 85 did. In Kiruna the same range ran from 78 to 100 in 100. A plan that leaves room for one or two extra nights, or for moving to another place, protects a trip more than any forecast weeks ahead.

What these figures leave out

They count the sky in one weather-grid cell per place, over the 1995 to 2025 record. City lights, local fog, the moon and clear patches smaller than the cell are not in them, so a night the model calls cloudy can still give a view from the right spot, and the other way round. Each place page has the same curve for every month of the year.
