Northern lights tours in Tromsø
The official page recommends "an organised tour with a local guide", because guides monitor the weather, cloud cover and aurora activity. It lists three types of night-sky tour: chase tours, experience tours and boat cruises. Cloud is the reason a tour that can move matters here: in the model, cloud took 72% of March nights over Tromsø.
Chase and experience tours in Tromsø
Chase tours go by bus, minibus or car/van. The route depends on where the sky is clear that night. They can last up to 10 hours. Experience tours run between September and early April and go to secluded locations away from crowds. They mix activities, including overnight stays in sami lavvos, dog sledding and snowmobiling. The official page gives no duration for them.
Boat cruises from Tromsø
The boat leaves from Nerstrandkaia. Passengers must arrive by 20:40 for the 21:00 departure. The trip lasts approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, and the boat does not land during the cruise. On board there is a warm lounge with panoramic windows, free coffee and tea, a café, and a guide who explains the science and myths of the aurora. If no lights are seen, passengers get a free ticket for another cruise in the same winter season, if seats are free. Sightings cannot be guaranteed.
